I am a licensed funeral director and have been struggling for years to convince the folks that I meet with at the time of death as well as preneed to celebrate the life of the individual. Your idea is, although not completely new, a wonderful idea and I hope that your publicity helps to generate an awareness that not only benefits the survivors through a very emotional time, but also benefits the industry in a way that keeps some sort of tradition alive. Sadly to say we are losing that.
 

This is such a refreshing idea. Celebrating ones life for the days lived instead of the days missed seems such a wonderful alternative. I can understand fully the sad somber event of a childs sudden passing to be beyond celebration, but in the case of a life fully lived let's reflect and share with joy the many ways that they touched us.
Personally, I want pony rides, cotton candy, and NO casseroles!
 

We have always had good old Polish wakes in our family. Then after the funeral everybody got togeather for a meal and talked about the person. I've always wanted to throw one last party for my friends and relatives. Only thing is, everybody would have to tell one good tale about me. It could either be true or a real good lie.

A funeral is just another celebration of one of the milestones in life, a ceremony that helps mark the significance of life and allows the family to draw support from the community. The sad truth of the matter is that many people have lost site of that fact. This was most likely due to lack of creativity on behalf of funeral professionals, coupled with the fact that many people have turned away from organized religion. Worship through an organized religion or church is manifested in most societies through ritual and ceremony. As people turn away from church and religion, they loose connection with the meaning behind many of these rituals and ceremony. Since funerals were historically based mostly upon ritual and ceremony, the traditional funeral may have lost any significant meaning for many of these same people.

So, today we are trying to bring meaning back to the ceremonies or parties, or gatherings, that families choose to host at the time of death. Some may be funerals, some may be wakes, some may be catered parties. In order to stage the event, most families need help. After all, it usually has to pulled together in a short time period , due to the need for family to gather support from others in a time of loss. Many funeral directors are showing their creativity in developing unique and meaningful celebrations, not all of them are funerals. There will always be a cost involved whether it is a funeral celebration or a party at the local hall. And if the event is meaningful for the family, the cost will be of little significance.

I work for a Funeral Home and just bought your book today! I went in to get a different book, but purchased The Funeral Planner instead! I have been reading thru the comments and find them all very interesting. I deal with greiving families on a daily basis and find it hard at times to give them any kind of comfort. I agree that this should not be such a sad time, although I know it is hard not to be, but I really think that most people feel almost guilty for even smiling or laughing at these time. I notice that most people don't stay long and always hear the comments about how they just have to get outta there (the funeral home). If more people thought of it as a milestone-celebration of ones life, the thought of funeral planning would not be put off like so many people do and leave it up to their families do deal with. I cannot stress the importance of at least letting your family know what you want.......Well, I'm off to start reading!!

I just read the novel and I kind of was in that same situation.
I am a senior, taking up Marketing and it just so happen that we were assigned to do a marketing plan on our desired industry. Well, one copied my work but I didn't feel bad about it because I see it as something that can help the poor thing (lol) only to find out'he' got chosen instead of me (tsk).
